If anyone else has read this book and wants to comment, feel free.)The book that I am reading is called, Hunger For Memory, and It is by Richard Rodriguez. We all know a little bit about Richard Rodriguez and how passionate he can be in his writings. This book is no different. In this classic memoir style of his, Richard brings up back to his very beginnings when growing up with is family. He talks about how he always felt like he was different as a child. When he was a child, the only language that he knew as a child was Spanish, and that English was some distant sound from the gringos, or white people. He considered Spanish to be very comforting to him, and that it gave him the since of family and trust and happiness, and that anything that was in English was not to be trusted. A lot changed throughout the course of the story. He begins to learn more and more English, and neighborhood kids began to like and know his name. Its a story of transition and insight, and I cant wait to finish the book that I have started.

In many ways this is a more difficult book than the others and so I give you credit for choosing it. It’s difficult because he writes poetically, using metaphor and simile, he makes reference to literature and history and social policy, and he uses a large vocabulary. One thing I suggest you do is go online and look up information about him. One thing you’ll discover is that he’s somewhat famous for his stance against bilingual education (teaching in Spanish and English) and against affirmative action (choosing a student candidate or a job candidate based on that person’s race). He’s taken a lot of flack for these positions. You might find that discussion interesting. After reading about his positions, I’d be curious to see what your own positions are on bilingual education and affirmative action.
